Portrait photography is an excellent skill to cultivate for anyone with a camera - whether you're simply taking better photos of your family or want to build out your business's portrait portfolio.

In this highly enjoyable full day course, you will learn and practice the key fundamentals to shooting great portraits, such as:

  • Posing female and male
  • Using correct lenses & camera settings
  • Using available natural light
  • Managing & controlling available light with reflectors and diffusers
  • Using on & off camera flash
  • Final demo on what can be achieved in a studio


This course will establish a great foundation for all styles of portrait photography. You’ll learn about the essential elements of a good portrait; lighting, posing and expression. Then you’ll learn how to work with what you've got, with instruction on shooting with window, natural, indoor, and studio lights. You can then continue with more specialized courses such as studio, nude and of course all the portrait photography workshops.


Course Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of photography including aperture, shutter speed, camera lenses and ISO including exposure modes. If you think you might need a bit of extra help, have a look at our Beginners Courses first.
  • Your camera, either a DSLR or a compact equivalent with manual exposure.
  • (No camera? No problem. We offer free camera hire during the course, just tell us in advance).
  • Positive attitude and passion for visual arts
