Location

Where do we go?

During this photography trip, we will focus on capturing the essence of London’s skyline and famous buildings. St Paul’s Cathedral, built in 1675 by Christopher Wren, dominates the city skyline. Surrounded by magnificent new buildings such as the Shard, the Gherkin and the London Eye, the skyline offers a fabulous contrast of styles. We will capture dawn at Big Ben and dusk at Tower Bridge. We’ll spend time on long exposures to capture the River Thames, juxtaposed with the beautiful architecture. Along the way, we will photograph famous icons of London—red buses, black taxis, telephone boxes. We will stay in the centre on the South Bank, near Borough Market and the Millennium Bridge.

Friday

Briefing and meeting

We will meet at the hotel at 19:00 in the bar of the London Premier Inn in County Hall. Flights from Geneva to London Gatwick or London Heathrow are best. From Gatwick, take the train to Clapham Junction and change for a train to Waterloo station. From Heathrow, take the underground to Piccadilly Circus and change to Waterloo station. The hotel is a 5-minute walk from Waterloo station. Allow around one hour of transport from the airports to the hotel.

We will have a drink at the bar, followed by a light supper and a briefing at the hotel, as we will have an early start the next morning.

Saturday

Dawn at Big Ben, Changing of the guard and London Skyline

We will meet early in the hotel reception and head straight to Big Ben to take pictures of the iconic Waterloo Bridge and Big Ben. As the sun rises, the clock tower glows golden, offering perfect opportunities for long-exposure images. We will photograph along the South Bank and then make our way across the bridge towards the Houses of Parliament. We will stop near Horse Guards for coffee and breakfast. At 10:30, we will go to Horse Guards to capture images of the Changing of the King’s Guard—an historic moment featuring the guards marching down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. This will be an excellent opportunity to use long lenses and practise street photography with guards, horses and crowds.

We will then head to Borough Market for lunch. This vibrant and lively market on the south side of the river offers a perfect atmosphere for a relaxed meal.

In the afternoon, we will continue along the river, crossing from south to north while photographing iconic buildings and the skyline. We will head to Tower Bridge for the early evening lighting and spend a couple of hours capturing the beauty of the bridge. We will end the day with dinner in a classic English pub.

Sunday

Focus on St Pauls and The City of London

After a traditional English breakfast at the hotel, we will walk along the South Bank to St Paul’s and capture the view from the Millennium Bridge. We will cross the bridge to the north side and head into the City, looking for iconic shots from this side of the river. The buildings, patterns, shadows and shapes of the City of London offer endless opportunities for creative compositions. We will have lunch in an old-fashioned pie house and visit “The Garden at 120” for an amazing skyline view of London. We will return to the hotel for a 17:00 finish so that participants can leave for the airport.
