Astrophotography Workshop
Kursinfo
In our astrophotography course, we'll guide you step by step through the essentials of astrophotography. We'll share with you not only our knowledge, but also our tips, tricks and secrets. The course is composed by 2x 3 hours in classroom to learn the basics and the editing, and 1x 4 hours outdoor to practice at night. We will show you how to get the best out of the equipment you use, and how to push your night photography to another level.
Day 1: Classroom theory (3 hours)
On the first day, you'll immerse yourself in the exciting world of astrophotography. You'll learn all the theory you need before practicing on Day 2. From understanding celestial dynamics to planning (where and when to practice), to how best to set up your camera to photograph the invisible! Dive into the secrets of long exposure to capture star trails, the great star field and the Milky Way, learning to master exposure and navigate the cosmos with ease. By the end of the first day, you'll have acquired the knowledge you need to turn your camera into a portal to the universe.
Day 2: Outdoor practice (4 hours)
Use your new skills to literally practice and keep learning! Set up your equipment and capture the beauty of the night sky. Our instructor will be by your side step by step, giving you personalized advice to help you capture breathtaking images.
For the Geneva area, practice will take place at Le Salève.
For Zurich area, practice will take place at...
Day 3: Post-processing and photo analysis (3 hours)
The journey concludes with a captivating exploration of post-processing techniques. Unleash the full potential of your captured images by learning techniques for pre-processing, image stacking, use of astrophotography-specific software and post-processing. Dive into software tools to bring out intricate details, balance colors and create stunning compositions. As you hone your skills, you'll see your snapshots transformed into mesmerizing works of art. Celebrate the culmination of your astrophotographic adventure, equipped not only with technical expertise but also with a portfolio of wonderful photos to share with the world. We'll give advice and share our knowledge.
For the post-processing, we will give advice and share our knowledge. However we strongly recommend our Lightroom and Photoshop courses as a follow up. After the editing session, we will end the day with a presentation of the pictures you took and have a short image critique.
Who should attend the Astrophotography Course?
It’s possible for anyone to do Astrophotography; all it requires is a basic knowledge of camera settings & functions. If you have no experience with manual & bulb mode settings, then we strongly recommend you take a beginners and then an intermediate course first. It isn’t required to have a huge experience, but you should be able to navigate between settings.
Kursinhalt
This course will cover:
- Knowledge of the celestial vault, structure of the solar system and our galaxy.
- Celestial dynamics. Notion of distance, time, apparent field, focal length.
- Adapting photographic tools to the specificities of night photography: aperture, ISO, shutter speed, manual mode, bulb, 500 rule, intervalometer.
- Location scouting and planning, sky quality and light pollution, locating objects in the night sky.
- Single exposure, multiple exposures and stacking techniques.
- Wide field of view, Milky Way, star trails, timelapse.
- For the more advanced, use of an equatorial mount for celestial tracking, to overcome the constraints of the Earth's rotation and gain access to deep-sky astrophotography (nebulae, supernova afterglow, galaxies, etc.).
What should I bring?
Often, we imagine we need the best equipment to capture such images of the night sky, but chances are you already have enough equipment that can suffice to capture a great image. Don't have everything you need? Check out our list of rental equipment.
- A camera with interchangeable lenses (DSLR, mirrorless, MFT – any camera that allows for manual settings and interchangeable lenses)
- A wide-angle lens ranging from 14mm to 35mm, zoom lenses are acceptable, the wider the aperture the better preferably (f/1.4 – f/2.8)
- A tripod is mandatory for Astrophotography (the stronger the better)
- A Intervalometer is highly recommended as it is required to use bulb mode (if you have an app that allows you to do exposures longer then 30.0s then that will suffice)
- A Star Tracker for example the iOptron Skytracker Pro (highly recommended but not necessary for the class)
- More than one fully charged battery for your camera (the more the better; 3-4 recomended)
- A headlamp to see in the dark.
- Hiking boots & some warm clothes (we will be standing around in the dark night for several hours and it can get cold)
- If you think you might need a bit of extra help then take a look at our Beginner & Intermediate Coursesfirst
Do not forget to dress according to the weather and prepare for evening chills.
Please note that due to adverse weather conditions, courses 2 and 3 may be rescheduled at a later date.
