Location
Where do we go?
The Matterhorn is one of the world's most famous mountain peaks and for sure one of the iconic shots when it comes to landscape photography. Standing almost 4’500m tall at the border of Swiss canton Wallis and the Italian Aosta valley, it shows a significant and distinct shape that is best seen (and photographed) from the east.
To get the best views and compositions of this Swiss classic, we will set camp at the Fluhalp and visit all the famous mountain lakes that reflect the Matterhorn like a mirror. The Stellisee will be on our list as well as the Grindjisee and 3 others. We will explore the high alpine region of Zermatt, visit the rural mountain village of Findeln and enjoy incredible panoramic views from sunrise to sunset.

Day 1
Meeting, walk to Fluhalp, first shots from Stellisee
After meeting at the Bahnhofsplatz we will start our photography weekend with a short walk through the village to take some first shots and get to know each other.
Saving energy for the upcoming sunset shooting, we will take the cable car from the Sunnegga Station up to Blauherd and hike a short trail (2km, 40min) to get to our accommodation, the Fluhalp. We will have a few moments to rest, unpack and explore the area nearby before dinner. Luckily, the famous Stellisee is only a stone's throw away. And within 10 minutes of downhill walking, we will reach our location for the first sunset shoot.
Optional: Depending on the forecast, we might stay out late to do some astro and milky way photography.
Day 2
Sunrise at Stellisee, Findel Glacier, Grünsee
We will get up early and visit the Stellisee for the second time to photograph the sunrise and capture the iconic Matterhorn reflections. After the first session of the day, we will return to the Fluhalp for breakfast and to rest a bit if necessary.
During the day, we will hike a round trip to scout out the area and do some travel style photography. If we get lucky, there is also a chance of wildlife. Eespecially the marmots might be out, so keep your long lens at hand ;-)
Starting above the Fluhalp and hiking towards the Findel glacier (don’t worry, we will only admire it from a safe distance), we will walk a section of the 5 Lakes Trail to visit the Grindjisee and have a lunch break there. Depending on weather and motivation, we can continue the route towards the Grünsee or do the shortcut to return to our accommodation via Stellisee. Distance and walking time will depend strongly on the route, but be prepared for at least 4 hours of hiking.
If you decide to bring a laptop or iPad to edit your photos during the trip, we will find some time for editing tips and to review your images during the afternoon. Please keep in mind that any device you bring on the trip will be additional weight in your backpack for the hiking at the beginning and especially at the end of the trip when we descend back down to Zermatt (see day 3). Even if having a big screen is nice, we will surely find a way to evaluate your pictures on your camera screen so you can save some weight, so please think carefully if bringing an extra device is necessary for you.
After having dinner at the Fluhalp, we will go out for our second sunset shooting. The location will be determined based on your preferences during the day.
Optional: Again, depending on weather and motivation after a full day outside, we might stay out for night photography.
Day 3
Sunrise shooting, (optional) 12km hike back to Sunnegga station
One last time, we will get up early and shoot at sunrise. Just like with the second sunset shoot, we will decide on the location based on your preferences and the conditions. After returning to the Fluhalp for breakfast, we will have time to rest and pack our stuff.
We will start our hike back down through some steeper terrain at the beginning until we reach the Sunnegga station. Instead of taking the cable car, we will continue hiking, passing the beautiful mountain village Findeln on the ‘Gourmet-trail’. Our descent leads through the forest on a very enjoyable, scenic path. This hike will be about 12km and 1000m elevation - luckily it’s all downhill, mostly with only moderate slope.
We will return to Zermatt in the early afternoon to finish the trip with a drink in a café before getting on the train back home.
Please note that we can only plan a rough timetable due to variables like weather conditions, the hiking speed of our group and the number of photo-compositions along the trail. Trains are the only means of transportation to reach Zermatt. But since there will be plenty of connections to take, I would recommend waiting to book your return ticket until just before leaving Zermatt.
