Southern Morocco is a feast for the senses — and for your camera. On this photography tour, you'll experience the red sand dunes of the Sahara at Merzouga, the labyrinthine medinas of Marrakech and Fès, traditional Berber villages and the golden desert light over the High Atlas.

You shoot at the best times of day with an experienced travel photographer who has known Morocco for years. On location, you learn street photography, portraiture and landscape photography — all in a single trip. The group is small (max. 6 participants), so you receive individual feedback and coaching.

Accommodation, local transport and all workshops are included. No prior experience needed — just curiosity and your camera.

This trip will be led by: Darren Lewey who speaks English

Location

Where do we go?

Nothing can quite prepare you for the landscapes in this part of Morocco. You’ll spend time photographing the landscapes and different tribes of people as you practice a wide range of photographic approaches with your guide including portraits, street shooting and night photography.

Traveling across desert plains, you’ll see grandeur from a bygone age where dramatic rock formations, an extraordinary testament to natural forces, form a backdrop to sweeping river valleys and crumbling Kasbahs. Dunes offer a kaleidoscope of shifting color and texture and the architectural splendor of the region’s most famous Kasbah –-Ait Benhaddou, dating back to at least the 13th century is undiminished and it still houses many families within its mud-brick walls.

This 8 day program covers the High Atlas Mountains including Ait Benhaddou, Dades valley and Todra Gorge as well as the desert south and Sahara dunes. The tour is an intensive photographic experience for developing your photography skills and is considered by previous guests to be a highlight tour for experiencing a range of subjects. We’ll fly into and out of Marrakech.

Day 1

High Atlas and the Tizi n Tichka summit before arriving at Ait Benhaddou

Arrive in the morning ideally before 12pm. With arrival and airport collection, we head to the desert over the High Atlas and the Tizi n Tichka summit before arriving at Ait Benhaddou. En route includes several opportunities to photograph crumbling Kasbahs perched overlooking the river valley. Ait Benhaddou is the site of the oldest Ksar in Morocco and still houses many families within its labyrinth of mud-brick walls. We’ll arrive in time for the ‘golden hour’ of light whilst the remote setting offers the chance for some time-lapse star trail night sky photography from the terrace of your auberge.

Day 2

Dades Valley’s crumbling Kasbahs and elevated views

The morning is set aside for both exploring the village, concentrating on the stunning views around the Ksar and the narrow passageways as well as photographing two families in their homes including their work on a traditional loom weaving Berber carpets. After lunch, we depart for Dades Valley arriving in the late afternoon light to photograph the rock formations known as ‘monkey toes‘. The auberge for the evening is a short drive further on. After dinner, you'll take a 'night' photography workshop.

Day 3

A Berber family in their cave home

After breakfast, we’ll visit a sandal maker and his Berber family where you can photograph him in his workshop and at home. After lunch at the spectacular zigzag gorge road, we'll leave for Todra Gorge and the unique hotel location a short walk from our first nomad family.

Day 4

Photographing nomads close to Todra Gorge

At first light, we’ll photograph our second family a short walk from the hotel. After breakfast, we depart back along the road to the main Gorge where you can stop to photograph the overview of the palmeraie in Todra’s river valley, a maze of date palms and patchwork of tiny crop fields. Afterwards, we’ll continue on to the hotel for that evening and the location for some fabulous photography in a Ksar and village, mostly untouched by tourism. This special village offers unique shots of tunnels within it.

Day 5

Ksar tunnels and local subjects

An early start in the tunnels and an opportunity to photograph local women. Lunch is followed by a portrait workshop photographing a Ksar resident in her mud-brick home.

Day 6

A large desert market at Rissani & Dunes at Merzouga

After breakfast, we’ll set off for the dunes at Merzouga and our hotel: Auberge Du Sud, stopping en route at a large desert market at Rissani, to photograph artisanal workers. The afternoon arrival at the dunes allows the opportunity to photograph your first desert sunset.

Day 7

Skoura and its palmeries, a UNESCO heritage site

After some morning dunes photography, we’ll head to see a family of Gnawa musicians in a nearby village for a portrait workshop using natural lighting. We’ll take lunch before our onward journey to Skoura and its palmeries, a UNESCO heritage site. Arriving there, we’ll photograph a crumbling Kasbah in the oasis.

Day 8

Departure from Marrakesh

This is departure day and we’ll make our way back to Marrakesh airport in time for late afternoon flights (ideally after 5pm).
