Night & Long Exposure Photography
Long exposures, shooting in the magic hour
Course Info
There is that special time of the day when daylight turns into dusk and then melts into darkness. It’s on every day, everywhere in your city, and it’s for free!
Take your tripod and join us to discover the creative opportunities that these few hours bring to us, photographers.
During three hours, we will explore the challenge that a dazzling sunset or gradually diminishing light means and learn how to turn this into amazing photos! We’ll test the limits of our cameras as the fragile balance balance between natural daylight and artificial light sources tilts from one end of the scale to the other.
Course Requirements:
We assume that you already know the basics of your camera settings and key concepts like Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, exposure, metering etc. If you are not yet comfortable with these, we recommend to join one of the beginners classes first.
Course Outline
This three-hour intensive workshop is balanced between day and night and always starts about one hour before sunset.
After a short theoretical introduction we’ll focus on taking pictures against the sky, creating beautiful silhouettes. We’ll use flashes to provide fill light and to modify the dynamic range of our scenes. We’ll experiment with long and even longer shutter speeds. And we’ll have fun using our own light sources to create light and illumination in the dark.
In this course we will cover:
- How to benefit from low light and get amazing saturated colors during sunset
- How to take long exposure photos
- How to use your tripod
- How to set your camera for tripod shoots
- How to do light paintings
- How to use flash in the dark
What to bring with you:
- If you can, bring a tripod. If you don’t have one, get one or let us know and we’ll bring one for you.
- Pack all the mobile light sources you find in your home: torchlights, flashlights, LED light, bike lamps, etc. We’ll bring you all we have, but don’t forget: the more, the merrier.
- And by all means bring all your lenses and fully charged camera batteries.
- Do not forget to dress according to the weather and prepare for evening chills.
